Heavy-duty pavers are specialized interlocking concrete paving units engineered to perform in the most demanding environments. There are two key features that distinguish these units from standard, or “light duty”, paving units:
- Increased Thickness: These pavers are thicker, typically 70 mm (2 ¾”) or more, to effectively manage and distribute concentrated loads. This increased mass is crucial to prevent pavement failure.
- Low Aspect Ratio: Aspect ratio (the ratio of paver length to thickness) is typically 3:1 or less. This low ratio is fundamental to stability, preventing individual units from rocking, tilting, or fracturing under extreme vertical and horizontal forces, such as heavy vehicle braking and turning.
Heavy-duty pavers are specifically designed to withstand extreme loads and continuous use, making them the superior choice for surfaces that will experience vehicular traffic beyond typical residential or light commercial use.
Heavy-duty pavers are typically recommended whenever the paved area is expected to handle the weight of semi-trucks (including standard H-20 loading requirements), heavy equipment, emergency vehicles or constant and cyclical car traffic. This includes applications like parking lots, streetscapes, shipping yards, heavy equipment storage areas, bus terminals, and service vehicle access routes. When properly installed using the appropriate construction methods, our heavy-duty pavers effectively resist forces, preventing rutting, shifting, and surface deformation even under demanding conditions.
Benefits of Heavy-Duty Pavers over Asphalt or Poured Concrete
Segmental Flexibility: Unlike poured concrete, the segmental nature of pavers allows the pavement to flex and move slightly with freeze-thaw cycles. This virtually eliminates the cracking commonly found with rigid surfaces.
Non-Destructive Utility Access: Segmental paver units can be easily lifted for access to underground utilities (e.g., water lines, sewer pipes) and then relayed. This results in significantly lower repair costs, less site disruption, and reduced environmental impact compared to having to saw-cut, dispose of and repour asphalt or concrete.
Immediate Traffic Use: Upon completion of the installation, the pavement is immediately accessible to traffic, eliminating the costly curing time required for poured concrete or setting time for asphalt.
Aesthetic Versatility: Unlike asphalt or poured concrete, our heavy-duty pavers are available in multiple shapes, sizes, colors and textures to create designs that offer superior aesthetics while not compromising performance.
Selecting the right heavy-duty paver is just the first step. For maximum performance and longevity, the overall design of the system and installation methods are equally crucial.
- Laying Pattern: The laying pattern used can add a significant amount of strength to the design. A herringbone pattern provides the best ‘lock-up’ for rectangular shaped pavers, adding strength against rotational forces such as tires at a roadway intersection. This pattern delivers performance, similar to how an ‘L’-shaped paver resists twisting and tipping.
- Sustainability: For projects with stormwater management requirements, permeable heavy-duty pavers are available. These pavers work as part of a system that efficiently manages surface water, reducing runoff, naturally filtering pollutants, and recharging groundwater.
- Mechanical Installation: For large-scale, heavy-duty projects such as streetscapes and big parking lots, installation efficiency is crucial. To address this, we have a variety of heavy-duty pavers that are designed for mechanical installation, which delivers faster results and lowers labor costs.
