Once the United States gained independence from Britain six warship were constructed to defend itself. Constitution was built in the north end of Boston and launched on October 21, 1797. While she enjoyed a few minor skirmishes her greatest glory was defeating four British frigates during three separate engagements during the War of 1812. She earned her the nickname ‘Old Ironsides’ because cannon fire from enemy ships couldn’t seem to penetrate her strong oak hull. Charlestown Navy Yard was home for most of her fighting life and she can still be found here. A small parkette at the water’s edge allows for a wonderful view of her majesty. 8×24 Promenadeâ„¢ Pavers with Umbriano® finish in French Grey, Winter Marvel and Grenada White were installed with permeable spacers in a permeable setting bed to minimize runoff into the water. The beautiful grey tones and large stone seat walls create a lovely ambiance for a little history lesson.
