The Delta Toronto is a 46 storey flagship hotel that anchors the Southcore Financial Centre, a commercial office campus southwest of the downtown core and Union Station. The LEED-certified tower rises from a rectangular podium of three floors adjacent to the main rail corridor and connected by the PATH system to public transit, the CN Tower, MTCC, Aquarium and Maple Leaf Square. Corban and Goode designed and oversaw construction of streetscape, the hotel courtyard and private roof terraces of the hotel and entire SFC Campus. The Delta Toronto Hotel received the 2015 Toronto Urban Design Award of Excellence for a Tall Building in Context, with specific reference to successful handling of the public realm creating a vibrant pedestrian experience. Paving type, surface texture and colour play a significant role articulating treatment to serve multiple functions and high volume traffic of the Bremner Blvd Promenade and connected public realm. Streetscape design features generous sidewalk width and distinctive paving that extends from curb to building face to create a continuous signature walking surface for the hotel and SFC block. An elegant cascade of limestone steps extends seamlessly from the lobby and connects the glazed two-storey space with Lower Simcoe Street. The Delta entrance courtyard showcases Unilock Series 3000 pavers 400 x 200 x 100mm installed in high contrast colour panels of Black Granite and Glacier White to guide valet management of hotel vehicular and pedestrian circulation. Use of Unilock Series 3000 also serves to mark and announce cars crossing Bremner Promenade, a major Southcore pedestrian route. An Ipe wood wind screen is detailed to reflect the warm-toned wood panelling of the hotel lobby and positioned to channel traffic. Unit pavers laid out in herringbone and running bond patterns alternatively address forces exerted by large vehicles and provide legible direction to pedestrians.
