The Post at 200 Smith reimagines a United States Postal Service processing center as a vibrant work community by converting the sprawling environment into a collective of fresh, cohesive workspaces. From the original one-story warehouse, loading docks and three-story office building, this dramatic repositioning effort provides a new mezzanine and 430,000 square feet of rentable space with a central courtyard. By recycling much of the industrial aesthetic of the original building, the new Post at 200 Smith recalls a manufacturing past, featuring exposed steel and large areas of reclaimed wood cladding. Former loading docks are repositioned as terrace and retail spaces running the length of the building. A new courtyard is carved out of the original building to introduce light and a new common gathering space, designed to host anything from intimate gatherings to large-scale events. The paving pattern in the courtyard recalls the postal service ‘bar code’ in a linear pattern using 6 x 24″ and 12 x 24″ with Umbriano® finish in French Grey, Grenada White and Winter Marvel, accented with a Smooth Premier finish in Sycamore to tie into the wood features. The site is comprised of a mix of permeable and non-permeable pavers to facilitate site drainage while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic.
