The neighboring streets that run along the coastline of Kenilworth Beach in Illinois have undergone a much-needed facelift to match the area’s renowned picturesque coastal backdrop and high-end residential style.

The Village of Kenilworth Public Works Department, with the combined efforts of Unilock Chicago and LPS Pavement Co. of Oswego, IL, saw the completion of nearly 84,000 square feet of permeable interlocking concrete pavement, in an effort to mitigate a long-standing stormwater management issue that plagued Chicago’s affluent North Shore. The two-phase project saw six north-south streets undergo a revitalization, in order to address drainage limitations and enhance the capacity of the outdated 1920s-era combined storm-sanitary sewer systems, which had long been exposed during heavy rain events. Following a heavy downpour in 2008, residents living on the most affected streets were met with a daunting 10 in. or more of standing water at the base of their driveways.

After careful consideration, Unilock Eco-Optiloc pavers were selected to tackle the problem. Eco-Optiloc pavers are designed with special spacer bars, creating a wider gap between units that is capable of allowing infiltration of up to 912 inches of rainwater per hour in the area. Aside from its’ permeable advantages, Eco-Optiloc features a patented L-shaped design provides exceptional lock-up strength to withstand even the heaviest loads.

In addition to enhancing drainage capabilities, the updated streetscape now cleverly incorporates the absorbed rainwater back into the natural environment in a practical and efficient manner. This not only helps reduce energy consumption, but also safeguards residents’ land for future generations.
