York Cemetery

Fronting onto Beecroft Road are the extensively landscaped entrance gates and boulevard leading inside the York Cemetery. Opened in 1948, it now encompasses 172 acres of land and continues to support the rapid growth of the North York community as a much-valued greenspace within the dense urban centre. The addition of a chapel, reception centre and the Garden of Remembrance precipitated the cemetery to upgrade its entrance to realign with the nearby intersection and improve the surrounding streetscape, enhancing both pedestrian and vehicle safety, as well as the accessibility to the memorial cenotaph. Selecting historically appropriate materials was one of the key priorities for this project. While limestone was used to design the entrance gates, the landscape architect, Janet Rosenberg and Studio, chose Umbriano® in French Grey for the entryway due to its elegant mottled surface and high performance for busy pedestrian areas. Resembling natural granite, the unique pavers compliment the garden’s granite memorial boulders and niches, and reflect the tranquillity and history of this site.
