Following the 2015 Pan Am Games, the one-time Athletes Village in Toronto’s West Don neighbourhood has been transformed into a contemporary urban village. The Canary District now incorporates a 35-acre mixed-use urban community within the fast growing downtown east, focused on convenient living, health and wellness, as well as fulfilling the numerous amenity needs of young families. The master-planned community thrives as new developments, such as the Cooper Koo YMCA, George Brown College Residence and Canary District Condominiums, rose above ground during Phase 1 of the redevelopment project. Since then, there have been spurs of retail and housing growth, as well as the construction of the pedestrian-friendly Front Street promenade. Series finish was used to create the spacious large-format paved city sidewalks and plaza spaces, as the granite and quartz surface offers maximum performance on busy pedestrian streets. Lined with greenery and other landscaping accents and sculptures, the paved promenade was designed to accommodate the increased street-level activity and connect the series of tall columns and glass building facades with the new urban streetscape.
