Veterans Memorial Park is in the heart of Stamford, Connecticut, right in the middle of a circle of businesses and amenities. These include Stamford Town Center Mall, the Landmark Square office complex, First County Bank and a busy bus stop. In 2020, the Veterans Park Revitalization Plan was realized to transform the misused park into a place of quiet reflection and public events, highlighting the significant war monuments throughout the park and to honor Stamford’s veterans.
A memorial feature representing the five branches of the military is central to an upgraded plaza, strengthening the Veterans Memorial theme. The regraded hillside features an amphitheater with the ability to seat up to 300 people for public events, atop of which sits granite monoliths and monuments, surrounded by benches and additional landscaping to create a place of quiet reflection. Additional paths to the bus stops and lighting throughout address the park’s previous safety issues.
Below the monuments, the designers chose Unilock 8 x 16” pavers with the Umbriano® mottled finish in Winter Marvel. The Umbriano® finish with EnduraColor™ and EasyClean™ technologies creates a long-lasting, easy to clean surface perfect for the high traffic public park that the redesigned Veterans Memorial Park promised to be. Bordering the walkways in the park and in front of the buildings, Umbriano® pavers in Autumn Sunset add a pop of color to contrast with the greys used in the rest of the design.
