The Newton Streetscape project was developed to help the city improve their local economy, attract new residents, visitors, and business, and plan for future growth and success. The goal of the master plan was to raise local and regional awareness of the community and begin the revitalization process by improving Newton’s main asset, its historic downtown. The creation of a ‘destination’ in the downtown was a large investment that included the replacement of outdated underground utilities and infrastructure, as well as above-ground improvements. Taking a ‘complete street’ approach, these improvements include newly paved travel lanes, bike lanes, and parking, as well as widened paver sidewalks, decorative lighting, street trees, benches, and trash and recycle bins.
The enhanced sidewalk design, which was the result of a series of community public meetings, includes two Unilock pavers; Richcliff and Town Hall. Richcliff was used to create the slate patterned walkways. Town Hall, a product inspired by historic clay street pavers, was used between the street trees and at the road intersections to match the improved sidewalks on adjacent roads. Both Richcliff and Town Hall feature Realaâ„¢ and Ultimaâ„¢ concrete technologies which offer superior durability, strength and authentic appeal, perfect for meeting the needs of future growth in this historic city core.
