This precedent setting project has created a downtown environment complete with improved pedestrian facilities, upgraded lighting, and distinctive street furnishings unique to Kitchener’s City Centre District. This pioneering Ontario project boasts many innovative design features: infiltration planters designed to promote groundwater recharge, low-profile curbs to improve pedestrian accessibility, and a flexible parking system that uses removable bollards to allow the city to respond to the changing face of the downtown in the different seasons. The Unilock Umbriano® pavers were an essential element to the contemporary redesign.
