As part of an improvement plan in Toronto’s main Chinatown neighborhood, a segment of Huron Street was pedestrianized into a public square and streetscape that serves as a landmark and programmable space for the community. New life was injected into the previously somewhat drab area with Chinese art pieces, a bronze Qilin sculpture, unique seating and lighting, and decorative pavers.

Two Unilock pavers were chosen for the design of Huron Street; Bronte Street Paver® and Holland Premier™. Bronte Street Paver® was used in the roadways because it is ideal for heavy-duty vehicular applications with its superior load-bearing properties. Holland Premier™ was used throughout the widened sidewalks in two colors to create unique patterning. This product features EnduraColor™ Facemix Technology which delivers a colorfast and durable surface that can withstand the frequent use of high-traffic pedestrian spaces without wearing. This is perfect for a busy downtown neighborhood like Toronto’s Chinatown.

With Chinatown being a hub of retail and cultural activity, this streetscape improvement project offers an enhanced outdoor space that lends itself to gatherings and events. The chosen design elements, from the pavers to the beautiful art pieces aid in creating an atmosphere that enriches the cultural experience in the neighborhood. Visitors and locals can relax on the distinct red benches, enjoy the artwork, and explore the community in the safety of this pedestrian-oriented streetscape.
