Streetscapes,
Urban Plazas
Trace Planning and Design, an Atlantic Canadian urban design and landscape architecture firm, worked extensively with residents to develop a ‘complete street’ concept that dissolved vehicular dominance through the creation of a ‘mixed-use’ urban corridor where all modes have a place within the downtown landscape. Auto-users, cyclists, pedestrians, skateboarders, scooter kids, seniors and residents of all ages and abilities came together to create a concept that ensured shared use. Through consultation, residents determined the traditional downtown Moncton street colour palette should be both softened and reversed. The customary asphalt grey and black of the street was used to define the sidewalk and the traditional red brick sidewalks became the base colour of the vehicle corridor. Subtle bands of colour variations blended with granite curbs to define movement corridors, parking spaces, building entries as well as lighting and planting intervals. The barrier-free ‘wall-to-wall’ design ensures comfort for all users. Trace developed the concept and new palette and worked with WSP Canada Inc. to ensure the stability and durability of the street base. The City of Moncton completed the first phase of construction in 2016, resulting in the creation of what is now known as Downing Place. This new route between Main Street and the waterfront not only provides a physical connection between the two places, but also unites the citizens of Moncton as a focal point for festival, celebrations and cultural events.
