Urban Plazas
Development in The District Detroit is a dynamic entertainment destination that includes the newly built Little Caesars Arena. The district planning and site design establishes the infrastructure for a range of events that will see the streets, plazas and open spaces fill with festivals and entertainment. The arena fronts onto a vibrant urban plaza featuring pedestrian friendly walkaways, planters and seating areas and populated by beer gardens and street cafes. A combination of permeable and non-permeable pavers was used to create the unique paving designs – both durable and richly detailed, they reflect the beauty and of the district, all the while accommodating thousands of fans, festival-goers and city visitors.
The Town Hall pavers add a time-worn, traditional appearance to the heavily used roadway beside the arena while the Umbriano finish offers a more contemporary, easy to maintain surface for the Beer Garden. The Artline pavers used in the plaza spaces were manufactured with recycled aggregates. The use of pozzolans replacing a substantial portion of the Portland cement, in combination with being manufactured locally, contribute towards LEED Materials and Resources credits. This once vacant area is now transformed into extensive pedestrian networks connecting the surrounding streets and creating vibrant open spaces that will allow people from across the region to recreate, contemplate and celebrate.
