Bigelow Boulevard is located in the center of the University of Pittsburgh campus, between the historic William Pitt student Union building and Cathedral of Learning buildings. The University partnered with the City of Pittsburgh to transform the street into a safe, welcoming space for the students and city residents. The creation of separate paths for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, and a beautiful new pathway serve as a connection between Pitt, Schenley Plaza, the Oakland business district and the community.
The designer, LaQuatra Bonci Associates, implemented a sustainable approach by using strategies that reduce the amount of impervious surfaces. Among these strategies were rain gardens, increased planting areas and most notably, permeable pavers. A combination of Unilock plank pavers and permeable plank pavers with Series™ and Smooth Premier finishes bring together the outdoor spaces with a colorful and appealing pattern, using visual and textural variation. The results – a vibrant, welcoming street that brings student and community life together.
The transformation also included the creation of a more accessible outdoor gathering space for student activities at the William Pitt Union Grounds. This was achieved through the design of a large circular gathering area. Designed with permeable plank pavers with Series™ finish in Mocha and Smooth Premier finish in custom colors – the contrast creates a striking and unique linear design leading people to the center of the space. The addition of stylized street lamps, raised garden beds, benches and paths radiating out from the circle complete the vision of an inviting accessible gathering space for individuals, groups and events.
