In 1974, Uni-Stone was installed at the Fire Hall on Yorkville Avenue in Toronto. Unit pavers were a brand new paving concept in North America having been introduced by Unilock only two years prior. Therefore, this would prove to be a great test of their capabilities. Forty years later, the Uni-Stone was still intact and enduring the rigors of daily fire truck traffic. However, it was decided they should be replaced. To meet heavy-duty standards, the new pavers must be durable and have an articulate design that matches the historical firehall.
Unilock’s Il Campo in Heritage Brown was chosen for its aesthetic to fit with the heritage building and accents. The proctor density of the original granular base was tested and no modifications were required. The new pavers were installed on top of the existing base. The 4″ x 12″ x 4″ paver was laid in a herringbone pattern for maximum ‘lock up’, adding strength to withstand the rotational forces of the fire trucks. This heavy-duty paver provided the durability required and looks great!
