How to select a Unilock paver

Unilock has established itself as North America’s leading hardscape company, continually pushing the frontiers of innovation and developing new products and technologies that are well ahead of the competition. We have a large selection of paver and wall products, as well as a variety of distinct and unique finishes and styles that meet and exceed ASTM standards, so deciding which paver will work best for your project might not be an easy choice. Here are a few critical questions to narrow down your options when selecting the right Unilock paver for your project.

What is the goal or style desired?

Define the project goal or style. Is the project application, such as a permeable site, most important to the success of the project or is it more important to be historically relevant? List your goals in order of importance and that will allow you to filter through the many options. Is there a story you are trying to tell through your design? Is there a rich history within the space that you’d like to articulate or preserve through your paver design? The Indianapolis Motor Speedway project is an excellent example, with designer Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf paying respect to the facility by using contextual materials once used to build the original motor speedway, aiming to be historically sensitive while providing new opportunities and new experiences for visitors.

Size, Shape, Laying Pattern and Application

The shape of the pavers you choose, whether it be square, rectangular, plank geometric or a mix of different shapes may already be defined by the style goals for your project but it may also be application driven. For instance, it is ideal for heavy-duty vehicular projects to use the L shape paver or to use a rectangular paver in a herringbone laying pattern to fit the use. Alternately, if you opt for larger pavers or slabs they will not be the right choice for vehicular applications. Consult the application chart in the Unilock Architectural catalog or filter through our products by application and/or shape. Consult with your local Unilock representative to establish what you need and to help recommend the best products and sizes for your design project that are available in your region.

Choose a Color

Determining a color will tie back to the overall style and aesthetic goals of your project. When you choose a paver product line, there will be a list of colors available for that product. You can also narrow down your options by selecting a color grouping, such as beige or grey from the filter options or by looking at all the color options on the color tab that will lead you to the finish and product line that carry those colors.

Determine a finish

Finish choice may be led by the color you would like to use on your project or you may want to start by selecting your finish first. Classic, exposed granite, brushed, and mottled are just a few of the options. Your choice may reside with how each performs.

Classic is a concrete mix of the same aggregates, cement and color from top to bottom of the paver. While very strong the color is worn away and large aggregates are exposed making the paver look faded and worn with time.

Face mix technology ensures that the surface of the paver uses a finer aggregate and concentrated color so that as it wears there will always be consistent color and aggregate for a like new appearance. With this technology we are able to create a variety of unique finishes including the exposed granite, brushed, mottled and more. Some of these can also include factory sealed surfaces that will ensure ease of maintenance.

Reala surface texture are truly unique to Unilock. Cast from real bricks, cobbles and stone the surface has an authentic appearance but is also combined with face mix technology to ensure longevity.
