The landscape design for the Waterloo Region Courthouse provides a contemporary green setting for the new facility and contributes to the revitalization of this strategic precinct through feature civic spaces and an enhanced public streetscape realm. In recognition of the regional nature of the facility, the design approach presents a theme of river and stone that is reflective of the Grand River landscapes. The Grand River is symbolic as a unifying and visible element of the cultural history and visual character of the Waterloo region, and is illustrated in the site as a continuous series of stone features, and native planting to support the theme. The streetscape design as green urban promenades features deciduous trees, with low continuous ground covers and decorative grasses in the soft landscape areas. A wide pedestrian walkway route is enriched with seating, limestone feature stones, natural stone and decorative unit paving with a linear pattern. Unlock’s large format pavers Series 300 x 600 x 100mm in (Special Order Grey) matches the natural stone units to achieve the design intent. The project was recognized in 2013 at the City of Kitchener’s Urban Design Awards and won an award.
