Streetsville Main Street Square, Streetsville

PMA Landscape Architects Ltd. (led by Project Architect CS&P Architects)

Mississauga, ON

The project was initiated by the City of Mississauga as a revitalization of a short but significant retail boulevard in historic Streetsville. The over-arching vision for this 100m-stretch of Main Street was to establish a pedestrian-priority and programme flexible space. It would act as a beautiful and occupied streetscape on a daily basis, with the ability to be closed off for large seasonal events. The design goal aimed at providing a sense of heritage by way of a contemporary interpretive aesthetic, providing a measure of eclecticism and rich meaning. The resulting landscape consists of a formal allee and bosque of high-canopy trees and a rich palette of unit pavers selected to reference the brick in the heritage architecture. The pavers sit atop a complex infrastructure of continuous soil trenches to support the abundance of trees and planting on the site. To encourage the plaza-like feel and function, flush curbs and bollards separated pedestrian and vehicular traffic patterns using best practices in accessibility and delineation for visual impairment. The predominant field paver consisted of the 100mm x 200mm Il Campo in Heritage Brown, with a paver warning strip consisting of 100mm x 100mm Unigranite in Natural Grey. The latter was chosen for its contrast in both colour and tactility.
